We just completed and published our ammunition comparison test of commercial M80 ball ammo. We did it to test its suitability for three separate reasons which we explain in the writeup. Head to the link below to read the full report with extensive test results. The results were not what we expected but we learned some interesting things.

Is it correct that XM80 rounds failed inspection to be sold to the US military? If true, Is the failure related to accuracy?

We have hear that they are failed M80s and we have also heard that are just overruns. Unfortunately we cannot confirm either way, so we just have to go off of our test results.

Great article, Mel. Really enjoyed it. As I stood up a a “proof of concept” Navy program, we shot a LOT of M80, primarily out of necessity early on.

However, even after match ammo became available to us, we still found M80 to be our preferred round through barriers. It’s nowhere near as good a choice as the bonded rounds proved to be, but it is much more hardy and predictable through glass for example than M118LR.

That is a very good point about M80. Back when we used the M118 (before LR) it was fantastic for barrier penetration and actually did great against airliner cockpit glass even. But the LR version with the Sierra matchking bullets are very poor barrier penetrators and poor through glass. The bullets are extreme accurate, but extreme fragile as well. The M80 with its thick jacketed FMJ-BT does much better in this role. Great point.

Yep, exactly. We’ll have another article coming out in a few weeks that talks more about this.
