I'm a baby at this I've only been into shooting for about 3 months now. My husband started me off with his AR-15 (I think that's what it is!) and also his 9MM. I was intimidated by these guns because of the loud BANG!
Well what can I say? I'm a chick! I never grew up around guns so when I actually got near some, it freaked me out! I have a lot of respect for weapons because of how powerful and how much damage they can do.
Anyways, how did you get started? What guns did you start using first? |

Keep using you husbands AR. It makes a good low recoil rifle to learn on. Most of use started out using 22lr just because everybody and their brother has one and they are cheap to shoot.
My first long range rig was a winchester model 70 in 7mm Remington Magnum. I slowly built it to it's current state (pictures posted around the forums) and it has worked out well. _________________ Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you. |

Well my husband did get me a 10-22 for my birthday. I love shooting it. But I do want to get used to his AR. I know it's going to take some time.
Maybe one day I'll be better than him |

I started out with a daisy BB gun, and worked my way up for about 30 yards with that, but when it couldnt reach far enough I switched to a 22 for about 5 bricks of ammo and have been on my 308 ever since. _________________ #2 Infidel

You mentioned that you were intimidated by these guns because of the loud BANG! Just checking, but are you wearing hearing protection? You could try wearing earplugs with earphones over the top, and that should help with the bang. I've seen one guy in competition who wears ear plugs and a motorcycle helmet over the top to block out the muzzle blast. That might be a little extreme, but I guess it helps him. _________________ Jon |

She was more intimidated by the look as well as the sound. Yes we use hearing protection every time we shoot. However im trying to teach her how to fire to save her life not just for sprting purposes. And in a life saving situation you wouldnt have time to put on those big old earmuffs before firing at the bad guy which can cause a different POA. I started her off on the AR-15 because i didnt have a .22 at the time. Now that she has a 10/22 shes been having fun firing that until she gets more confident. Im going to order some tech-sights so itll be easier to switch from the 10/22 to the AR-15 when shes ready as the sights will be familiar. She is however wanting to fire the 9mm more and more the only problem with that is her hands are a bit small so now we need to get HER a handgun that fits her little hands and that she likes! _________________ Chris

You know i had a wife that i couldn't really get to touch one of my rifles. Now she is off killing bigger deer than i do.
With the bang i invested in the formed ear pluggs. I think they ran me abou 20 aset. I personaly have bad hearing from carelessness on my part. Ifound these work 100 times better.

Stick him with the AR and the 10-22 and grab his Tac-Ops X-Ray. Tell him if he really loves you he'll get you a custom. _________________ www.excorioprecisionarms.com

See there is one slight problem with your option. If she has trouble handling the recoil of a small 5.56mm, then how will she handle the recoil from a .308? Im sure shell want a custom eventually... however i think ill need to go on another deployment in order to afford that one lol! _________________ Chris

well she isn't very big 5ft 120 pounds fully over dressed.
After i found out i have a damaged inner ear in my left i got talking to the ear dr an he was showing me the rubbery looking things. they work wayway better than the foam plugs. plus if you have hard time with water inyour ears while swimming the work good for that to.
Hope you can get it working for you.

my earliest memories are of wielding some type of object that could launch a projectile. BB gun, old .22 long rifle (long enough to use as a spear), 35 marlin, 44-40, 7x57 mauser (all my dads rifles). 9 years old my uncle bought me a winchester model 70 .270. From there i was hooked. shot anything that moved that i wouldnt get whipped for (lots of things to shoot out in the middle of nowhere where i grew up). _________________ USMC 91-99
