I really wonder how they'll push out to past 800, if at all, with an SR-25. Perhaps the Medium Sniper Rifle will be put into use, or they'll just try to get their hands on more match .50. Speaking of which, how is that XM107 coming along (as I recall, it was the 25mm anti-materiel rifle)? |

ive seen that the xm107 (barrett M82a1) is doing well against vehicles and light armored vehicles in afganistan and iraq...but about that XM110? never heard of it and i highly doubt that it will replace the m-24. If anything does replace it i think it should be the new A2 version.

| Quote: | KAC Wins U.S. Army XM110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) Contract

DefenseReview readers may remember that we published the Presolicitation Notice for the 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester) XM110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS), back in November (2004). Specifically, it was Solicitation #: W15QKN-05-R-0433. The 7.62mm XM110 SASS is supposed to replace the U.S. Army's old M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS).
Well, DefenseReview was told early yesterday evening (Monday) that Knight's Armament Co. (KAC) just won the XM110 SASS contract. They did it with a variant of the KAC MK11 MOD 0/SR-25 7.62mm sniper rifle designated as "SR-XM110". The competition had come down to two finalists: the KAC SR-XM110 and the...
Remington MPD (Military Products Division)/DPMS Panther Arms candidate.
So, the KAC SR-XM110 will now be known as the "M110". Chalk another one up for Knight's. |

The SR25 has been used in the Army for a number of years (actually, probably more than 10) with the Rangers and SF groups. (it never had a very good following due to reliability and accuracy). I would be very surprised if the army replaced the M24 with this rifle, but I would NOT be surprised to see this rifle replace the older SR25's and be adopted in front line units as a more DM type rifle. The Army just made a huge investment in the 2nd contract with remington on the M24 about 5 years ago, it seems too soon to be replacing them with a new contract for a replacement. The M24 has a good reputation, yeah, it needs a few things changed, but reliability and accuracy has been very good. The SF boys like them because they can (and do) chamber them in 300 WM.
But I've seen stranger things... I imagine the urban landscape of Iraq may have changed a few priorities (though I would think the spread out landscape of afgan would go the other way).
We shall see

Its certainly interested. I personally think its a bit over engineered, but its a step in the right direction in terms of improving the product. Yes, I could see the Army adopting that system, or a variance of it, but I do not believe their are any immediate plans to.

Good to see another winner for Knight's. Of course we probably won't be able to get one for a while, and if they do become available, they'll be outrageously expensive (a Knight's trademark )
On the positive side, perhaps Remington will sell theirs to the civilian market to recover its R & D costs.
I think the M24A2 has some definate improvements, but I agree with Mel, some of it is a little much, like that giant accessory rail. _________________ Bead Drawer |

in 1993 I was issued a SR25 for testing, during my tour with 5th SFG, working at the sniper locker. It worked verywell, but it was no M24.
we used the rifle in a few places world wide but mosty as a spotter weapon, but normally we used M203 or M14 as a Spotter weapon.
all in all the sr25 worked well in the controlled city / mild desert enviroments we used them in, but in the jungles of ---*&^%$ we had issues. _________________ U.S. Army (B4) |

They shouldn't overlook the tried and true.

I know most M-14's need to be tuned, if not rebuilt, by good armorers in order to be servicable for the DM/sniper role, but that by itself is not a good reason to go with newer and flashier. Randy Shugart did pretty good with it. |

I think they sould do like the Marine's, just uprade the scope to a variable power, well plus the unnecessary rebuilt of the fantastic M40A1 to the M40A3. Although I love the 10X Unertl and Leupold M3, I personally think that a variable power is much better, that is what the ARMY sould do, the M24 is a great rifle that really needs no improvment. Then again, look at it this way, both the USMC and ARMY snipers have been doing great with a 10X since they started with them, I believe the saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! |
