Welcome to what we hope becomes an annual tradition here at Sniper Central, our Sexiest Cartridge Alive (SCA) contest! So what is SCA? It is purely a frivolous exercise that started from a juvenile fascination with the appearance of loaded ammo cartridges! Everyone who is a serious shooter, has found themselves at some point in time looking at a loaded cartridge and saying “Wow! That looks really good!” Or maybe the opposite has happened “Boy, that is sure an ugly looking round.” Comments like that are based purely off of appearance, and nothing off of performance. So that is where we figured we would ground the rules of this competition.

Each year we will conduct an online poll in January for the sexiest cartridge alive. It will be purely a popular vote contest and the only rule is that the same cartridge cannot win two years in a row. So the winner of 2020 will not be eligible to win in 2021, but will be back in the contest in 2022. That is it! We also thought that we would run the competition in conjunction with Valentines Day each year and we’ll release the results around Feb. 14th. So after you have finished stressing over what you will do for Valentine’s Day, at least you will be able to see the annual results of the Sniper Central Sexiest Cartridge Alive competition.

So with those rules set, the voting was opened in January of 2020 and now the votes have been tallied. So without further ado, here are the top 5 winners and two honorable mentions! They are presented here in descending order, of course!

5th Place : .30-06 Springfield

The .30-06 is one of the all time classic cartridges in the world. It has been around for over 100 years, but yet she still turns heads and has a distinct tall and slender profile that many appreciate. The age and grace of this classic cartridge seemed to have garnered enough support from fans to propel it into the top five, an impressive showing that goes to show just how well grace can age.

4th Place : 6.5×55 Swedish

While the .30-06 was one of the oldest contestants in this years contest, it was not the oldest. That honor goes to the 6.5×55 Swede, having been developed in 1891 and adopted in 1894. Where the -06 was tall, slender and elegant, the 6.5×55 Swede shares some of those same lines and is, well, Swedish! Everything from Sweden is sexier, right? And look at the graceful shoulder that adds beauty to the lines of the case. Gorgeous.

3rd Place : 6.5 Creedmoor

It seems only fitting that the 21st century version of the 6.5×55 should one-up its predecessor. When we say one up, we mean it! It only beat the 6.5×55 by a single vote! While the Creed is shorter and a bit more stout than the Swede, the provocative shoulder is perhaps the feature that sets it most apart. The neck is also elegant and a bit longer than average which helps to draw the eye to that attractive shoulder. Bam!

2nd Place : .338 Lapua

When we listed the .338 Lapua as a contestant, we gave it the byline of “Bold and Dangerous” and that perhaps sums up the looks of the cartridge best. It is indeed bold, dwarfing the others in the top 5, and it most certainly is dangerous. The Lapua is the power-lifting health fanatic, dressed in a tight fitting evening dress. It just exudes power and it is that bold confidence that propelled the Lapua to a 2nd place finish in the 2020 competition.

The 2020 Sexiest Cartridge Alive : 308 Winchester!

In what can only be classified as an upset, the .308 Winchester won the first ever title of Sexiest Cartridge Alive. Without a doubt, the .308 continues to win the popularity contest in the sniping community and its looks remind us most of the “girl next door” sort of look. It doesn’t have a slender or shapely body or any physical features that stick out. But it is a familiar and famous shape that is instantly recognizable by shooters around the world. The competition is flashy, but flashy and demanding could not overcome the draw of comfortable and fun to be around in this years competition! Congrats to the .308 for being the Sexiest Cartridge Alive in 2020.

The Top Five:

The top five displayed from left to right as follows:
.308 Win, .338 Lapua, 6.5×55 Swedish, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30-06

Honorable Mention #1: .300 Win Mag

We were impressed by the results (6th place) of the .300 Win Mag as many do not find the cartridge particularly attractive with its stubby neck, shoulder and short bullet protrusion. But enough of the voters enjoyed its personality to propel it into a solid finish.

Honorable Mention #2: .223 Rem/5.56x45mm NATO

The amazing 7th place finish of the .223 Rem illustrates just how much the interviewing and questions can help a contestant. The .223 does not have much going for it, but whomever nominated the cartridge put the tag line “because the Democrats hate it” and that may have been the number one “answer” of the personality phase of the competition. The .223 probably had no right finishing in the top 10, but she nailed the interview!

The Honorable Mentions

Until we took this photo, we never really realized just how similar the proportions are between these two cartridges. Notice the short necks, similar shoulders, etc. The .300 Win Mag, on the left, is just a lot bigger than the .223 on the right.

We hope you have enjoyed this years Sexiest Cartridge Alive competition and we appreciate everyone’s participation. We will be back next year to do it all again….but the .308 will not be allowed to compete. (See the rules at the top).

The idea is to pick what cartridge purely looks the most attractive...
