Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT) was awarded a contract by the UK to build their semi-auto 7.62 sharpshooter rifle (L129A1) and they have recently introduced a commercial version of this rifle here in the USA. Price is about $5000.

Leica announces new 1600-B LRF

Leica has always been one of the leaders in compact Laser Range Finders and they have announced their latest 1600-B. With an effective range of 1600 yards and some advanced ballistic compensation capabilities, this new unit is looking good.

McMillan CS5 Concealable Sniper Rifle

McMillan just announced their CS5 concealable suppressed sniper system. It breaks down to 23" to fit into a common back pack. They have also setup their own 200gr match ammo and they say it will deliver .75 MOA. It is a neat idea and looks good.

Leupolds new Mk6 3-18x44mm
January 31, 2012

Leupold announced a new tactical mk6 scope. The Mk6 line has 6 times zoom magnification, in this case 3-18x, 34mm tubes and their new M5B2 knobs which is setup in MILs and has a "pinch and turn" element to prevent accidental movement. The scope is available with the CMR-W 7.62 or H58 reticles. Of course it has all of the other highest end features that leupold offers such as 28 mils of total adjustment and filled with an Argon/Krypton gas blend.

This should be an excellent sniping scope, and you can expect pricing to be up with the elite scopes. They also offer a Mk6 1-6x version as well.
New third Gen Burris Laser Rifle Scope

Burris has announced the third generation of their scope with integrated laser range finder. This time around they enhanced the electronics inside allow the shooter to actually program in the BC of their bullet and velocity to more accurately adjust their aiming dot within the scope.

The problem with LRF riflescopes has been the relatively weak laser and bulky size. They have cut the size and weight down, but their laser is still only good to a claimed 750 yards on a non reflective target. Better, but still not good enough for sniper use. A few more years perhaps... then they can focus on the other problems, fragile and batteries....

Federal Gold Medal Match 6.5x55
January 25, 2012

Federal now loads two different 6.5x55 swede match loads. One with the Sierra Match King 123gr bullet launched at 2750 fps which makes a decent load, still loaded pretty low pressure for older rifles. The other load is a very interesting 93gr Sierra Matchking which is launched at only 2625 fps. Obvious this is a very low pressure load with very minimal recoil intended for closer ranged matches.

The 93gr bullet is not even listed in the Sierra catalog but if someone where training a new young shooter, this might be a great load.
SHOT - Swarovski now offering custom BDC's

Swarovski announced that they are now making custom BDC's for their scopes. Send in your load and what shooting conditions you want and they'll get you a custom marked BDC.

Trijicon introduced their new dedicate tactical scope at SHOT.



It is a 3-15x50mm scope with FFP reticle and is available in MOA or MIL knobs as well as MOA or MIL reticle. Looks like a very promising scope and I like the power range.

HSM 408 CheyTac Ammo now available

With the limited availability of good 408 CheyTac ammo out there, it is nice to see that HSM now has their 408 CheyTac load available. It uses their own 400gr Solid Lathe turned bullet with a BC of .872 and launches at 2900 fps. Accuracy reports are good.

Burris adds MTAC line

Burris optics has added another tactical line up of scopes called the MTAC. This joins their FullField2 tactical, Fullfield TAC30, and XTR line of tactical scopes. The MTAC does have MRAD knobs and various other changes. They will be available in 2012

Hornady adds vintage match ammo for 2012

Hornady has announced their new Vintage Match ammo line which includes match ammo loads for the 6.5x55 Swede, 303 British and the 8mm Mauser. These loads are loaded to the older vintage loadings which are more mild and replicate the original loads. This line was developed for the advent of the CMP Vintage Rifle and Vintage Sniper Rifle matches. You can read about the loads here:

6.5 Grendel now a formal SAAMI cartridge

Alexander Arms formally announced that it has given up the trademark for the 6.5 Grendel and allowed it to become a formal cartridge. This will allow other brass manufacturers and ammo manufacturers to make brass and load ammo for this versatile AR cartridge.
Bushnell Release HDMR Scopes

Bushnell has released their HDMR 3.5-21x50mm scope with 4 different reticles and 1/10 MIL locking knobs. We'll keep our eyes on it and get one in for review. Looks like the initial release is only for a few dealers.

New US Optics SN-4 1-4x DFP

US Optics just announced a new technology they are using called Dual Focal Plane. This is a FFP reticle that is also day light illuminated allowing it to be used as a red dot sight as well as being a FFP reticle to be used for mid range engagements. They also offer this on their SN-4 1.5-6x scope. Interesting technology and it may work well on a SPR type of rifle...

Nightforce BDC reticles for NXS 3.5-15x

Nightforce just announced their velocity reticles for the 3.5-15x50 & 56mm scopes. There are eight variations of the velocity 1000 reticle, and they all come standard with zero stop and MOA knobs.

Sniper Movie 'One Shot' on its way

I was able to confirm that there is a new movie about a sniper in "pre production" right now. The working title is 'One Shot' and its about a sniper and goes through his career. Based off of the info we have here, they are paying a lot of attention to the details of the equipment as they are looking for authentic M40 reproductions... and they are being VERY picky (1 screw vs 2 screws on the rings, etc). The actor is Tom Cruise.. (yep, you heard that right...)

Savage 10 FCP HS Precision 338 Lapua
July 28, 2011

The new Savage model 10 FCP HS Precision chambered for 338 Lapua is looking nice. I personally prefer the HS stock vs the one on the BA savage rifle and combined with the DBM and effective muzzlebrake it gives this rifle a lot of promise. They are just starting to get to the market place now. The rate of twist is 1:9" which is fast even for the heavy 338 bullets, but it should do fine

Howa 1500's new 2-stage trigger

We tried out Howa's new 2-stage trigger they are putting on their rifles and it is pretty nice for a factory trigger, though this one sample had a slight "notch" in it right before breaking. But I like the two stage and that it is pretty light.

Combined with their 1:10" twist on their 308 rifles now, they are moving forward...

Kestrel has a a new Weather Tracker, the 4500NV, that has built in ballistic software. Kind of a nice idea to have the win meter/weather tracker combined with ballistic software. Could be a handy unit.. even comes in tan.

Sinclair Tactical Bipod

Sinclair international has a new tactical bipod that looks very promising. It has duel adjustments on the legs to span a range of 6.5-12.5" in height. It also is canting and the legs have notches. There is also a cant lock that is handy. They run about $200 and you can see and order them here:

Osama bin Laden Killed by Navy SEALs
May 2, 2011

In case you have not yet heard, Osama bin Laden was killed by US Navy SEALs during a raid on his compound in Pakistan. There are not many details from the ultra secret raid but the report is that no US Servicemen were injured and that bin Laden's body was buried at sea. Apparently it was SEAL Team Six that performed the operation.

New Bushnell Elite Tactical Scopes - hands on info
March 22, 2011

As many of you know, Bushnell has eliminated their Elite 3200 and 4200 line of scopes and combined them into a single "Elite" line of scopes. They retained their 10x40mm, 5-15x40mm, 6-24x50mm, and 3-12x44mm FFP Tactical versions of these scopes. With the 10x40 and 5-15x40mm there really is not much noticeably different beyond the box and the knobs know having white marks again instead of green. But I was messing with a 6-24x50mm model the other day and decided to test the number of MOA adjustments and to my surprise, there was an improvement! The old 4200 version was listed at 50 MOA of elevation and sometimes you were lucky to get that. But with this one, I measured a full 65 MOA of adjustment. That is now getting to the nicely usable category! I have not played with the new 3-12x44 version yet, but it always has had a good amount of elevation.
